초록
In his article, “Mourning and Melancholia (1917),” Sigmund Freud clearly defines the difference between normal and pathological grief response in a way in which lost object was dealt in the mourner’s psyche. When the bereaved experience the sudden loss of their beloved, their psychological response to the grief appears in various ways through their emotions, thought and behaviors and is often painful. When the bereaved are not able to thoroughly express their grief, they do not have the chance to relieve their sorrow. Consequently, the bereaved deny the reality of loss, distorting their perception. Pathological grief such as melancholia is carried by one’s identification to the deceased, according to Freud. When the bereaved cannot express their sorrow of loss in a healthy way or suppress their emotion, pastors or pastoral counselors should help them to grieve their loss and take them through the work of mourning. Many scholars on death and dying, such as Kübler-Ross and Westberg, understood the mourner’s grieving process as a linear process, but professional helpers should have an inclusive and flexible approach to the mourner’s behavior and their grieving reaction. This article surveys various documents and books on death and dying and is an investigation for effective and appropriate work in mourning.
