Abstract
Clinical supervision needs a unique educational environment to achieve the core goals of improving the counseling skills of practitioners and establishing counselor identity. The supervisor's challenge is to meet the practitioners' needs and expectations for supervision. A prerequisite for successful supervision is the formation of a secure relationship between the supervisor and the trainee. Safe supervision relationships provide a haven for self-reflection, sympathetic understanding, acceptance, and respect provided by supervisors to trainees who are anxious about counseling. Along with this, the supervision relationship is also a safe base that helps trainees improve their counseling skills, restore their confidence in counseling, and go to counseling themselves. It is no exaggeration to say that the attachment relationship of supervision with these characteristics is the most important element of supervision and determines the success of the supervision. In particular, the supervision relationship of pastoral counseling provides a unique opportunity for the supervisor to transfer his or her attachment to God. From the point of view of attachment theory, an understanding of God's experience and of practitioners can be enhanced by the ability of the supervisor to stay “now-here” and to notice phenomena that are taking place in a relational context. Mindfulness helps to accept and maintain an uncritical attitude to the various experiences of the present moment in a supervision relationship. A supervisor's mindfulness provides a spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physical basis for respecting practitioners and empathically understanding practitioners' anxiety about evaluation and feedback on counseling performance. Mindfulness in this respect proves valuable as a resource for the formation of successful supervision relationships and as an educational tool for trainees' change and growth. Therefore, pastoral counseling supervisors are urgently required to recognize the therapeutic and educational value of mindfulness and to accumulate sufficient knowledge and practical experience in mindfulness. In the process of trying to use mindfulness in supervision, the field of pastoral counseling should accelerate the development of Christian mindfulness that is distinct from general mindfulness by identifying Christian soul care and spiritual resources.
