Abstract

Attachment theory is applied to the relationship of Christian counseling to explain its asymmetric aspect. Empathy and alliance have been identified to be its primary constituting elements. Both of them focus on its symmetry. Its empathy is the mutual communicative attunement and understanding between a counselor and a client, on the basis of their neurophysical processes. Its alliance is their horizontal collaboration and consensus on their aims and process of counseling with the client’s more active participation. However, there is asymmetry in their relationships. The asymmetric aspect is explained in terms of attachment theory. Attachment is asymmetry in that it is natural for an attachment figure not to have the attachment behavioral system towards those seeking attachment. A counselor is the attachment figure. Attachment integrated counseling approaches suggest that counseling relationships are consisted of the counselor’s sensitivity and availability to facilitate the client’s secure attachment. And it is suggested that the counselor’s reflective attitude is contained to enhance the client’s exploration of his or her own attachment behavioral system. The attitude enables to explore the pattern and strategies of attachment he or she employs in interacting with the attachment figures. To enhance the secure attachment in the Korean Christian counseling relationships, 4 suggestions are constructed. First, it is good for a Christian counselor not to form attachment towards his or her clients. It includes the internalization of clearer boundary and suspension of the counseling due to the traumatic experience. Second, it is good to take the role of safe haven. It includes emotional sensitivity, availability, and flexibility. Third it is good to hold the reflective attitude. It includes the respect for the client’s reflective functioning and facilitation of exploration on his reflective functioning represented in the counselor’s behaviors. Last, it is good to enhance the client’s exploration on his or her attachment behavioral system. Particularly, it includes the client’s exploration on his or her attachment behavioral system he or she employs in interacting with the attachment figures in the Christian communities and with the objects of the Christian faith.
