Abstract

The contemporary Korean church is transforming from a community defined by a singular cultural identity into a multicultural congregation where individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds shape their faith together. In this process, migrant congregants often encounter complex existential conflicts as they adapt to new faith communities. Such experiences present significant challenges to the formation of their religious identity. While previous pastoral counseling studies have focused mainly on issues of cultural difference or social adaptation, this study goes beyond these limitations to explore in greater depth the internal structure of migrant believers’ conflicts. Drawing on the core concepts of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan—désir (desire), manque (lack), and altérité (alterity)—this research analyzes the underlying psychological and spiritual tensions that remain unseen within multicultural faith communities. In particular, it reinterprets through a Lacanian lens the inner experiences of migrant congregants as they reconstruct their identity as faith subjects, examining how norms of identification, as well as linguistic and symbolic systems, generate experiences of lack and the difficulty of subjectivation. Building on this analysis, the study critically assesses the practical possibilities and limitations of a psychoanalytic approach in pastoral counseling contexts. Ultimately, it proposes pastoral and theological directions that enable the Korean church to embrace multicultural realities and support migrant congregants as they grow into healthy faith subjects.
