Abstract
This study phenomenologically explored the experience of involuntary job loss and the psychosocial adaptation process of highly educated young women. Participants were nine unmarried women aged 30-35 with non-regular employment histories who had completed master’s or doctoral programs, and were job seekers 12 to 26 months after involuntary job loss. In-depth interview data were analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) method, yielding 63 formulated meanings, 18 themes, and 7 theme clusters. The experience theme clusters derived were: 'Shock of involuntary job loss for highly educated non-regular workers', 'Struggling to escape the state of joblessness', 'Losing meaning in life due to a sense of powerlessness and depression', and 'Economic poverty falling short of high-education expectations'. The coping theme clusters were structured as: 'Self-care for the wounds of involuntary job loss', 'Exercising the will to respect one's own worth and needs', and 'Advancing toward social re-affiliation'. These results indicate that highly educated unmarried young women do not experience job loss merely as an economic loss, but as a complex process accompanied by an unstable sense of identity and a crisis in the meaning of existence. Based on these findings, a pastoral counseling perspective was presented, reinterpreting occupational delay as God's "temporary pause," suggesting that involuntary job loss can be a stepping stone for growth rather than a stumbling block. It was discussed that an approach to help participants recognize God's unconditional love can serve as a turning point for those absorbed in a 'worthless self' to accept a 'new identity' and experience positive self-change.
