Abstract
This study examines the conversion process during young adulthood, based on Letty M. Russell’s theology of ‘Just Hospitality,’ analyzing it through the lens of Lewis R. Rambo’s theory of conversion and pastoral counseling empathy. A case study illustrates these perspectives. Young adulthood is a critical period for identity formation, relational transitions, and spiritual maturity, yet it is also marked by deepening social and psychological instability. Accordingly, this study applies Rambo’s seven-stage model of conversion to interpret the dynamics of young adult conversion step by step, revealing its practical significance through pastoral counseling empathy grounded in the theology of Just Hospitality. In particular, through Russell’s principles of decentering hospitality and relational justice, this study emphasizes that conversion is a transformative process of coexistence with the Other. Furthermore, within the Korean church community, pastoral counseling empathy should be practiced in the fellowship of God’s welcoming love and solidarity, demonstrating that the conversion of young adults can be sustained through communal care and relational solidarity. This research suggests that in the field of pastoral counseling in Korea, the theology of Just Hospitality can serve as a theological foundation for pastoral care and counseling approaches to young adult conversion. Finally, it concludes by presenting practical implications for those who accompany and care for young adults within the Korean church community.
