마오의 사회주의 중국과 대안적 근대성

이 글은 마오가 추구했던 근대화 방식에서 중국적 근대성의 흔적을 찾아보려는 노력의 일환으로 작성됐다. 마오는 근대의 문제를 본격적으로 다루지 않고 있기 때문에 이 글은 방법론적으로 마오의 글과 행위를 해석학적으로 분석하여 그가 갖고 있던 근대에 관한 생각들을 드러내 보이고, 그런 생각의 조각들을 연결하여 그 원형을 발견하는 방식으로 구성되어 있다. 이런 작업을 통해 발견한 결론은 마오의 근대화 방식은 소련은 물론 서구의 방식과 달랐으며, 그가 추구했던 것은 대안적 근대성이었다고 주장한다. 특히 대약진운동은 기술과 과학에 의존하지 않고, 순전히 인민의 의지에 의존하는 새로운 형태의 생산양식이었으며(따라서 전근대적이라는 평가에서 자유롭지 못하며), 문화대혁명은 이런 새로운 생산양식을 뒷받침하기 위한 문화혁명(따라서 탈근대적이라는 평가를 받게 된 것)이었다고 주장한다.
