Abstract

The features of the public and the private sphere in Soviet Russia, constitute themselves as an elusive, but still significant problem which would provide a basis for defining its basic characteristics. Drawing on Hanna Arendt and Jeff Weintraub’s work, this paper is an attempt to understand how the private sphere has been constructed and changed over time in the Soviet. The two terms have varing meanings depending upon the context, the premise for analysing them here is the public as having “visibility” and “collectivity” in opposition to the private. In this way, the private sphere in the socialist city, lying within the continuum of the public sphere, allowed the state to intervene in institutional, and sometimes, violent ways. However, since the death of Stalin, “individuality,” one feature of the private, had increasingly been admitted by the state, while another feature, “invisibility” was not protected enough in relation neither with the state or with the neighbourhood. As the distinct two features of the private realm had taken a different path in Russia, the relationships between the public and private appeared somehow different from its Western counterpart.
