Abstract
This study investigated the effects of institutional development on the target country selection of Chinese cross border mergers and acquisitions. The research samples include 887 cross border M&A deals in 80 countries from 2000 to 2014. With a conditional logit model, we found that Chinese firms are likely to acquire target firms which are in countries with a lower level of voice and accountability, political stability and an absence of violence and control of corruption. Also, Chinese firms are likely to make an M&A transaction in countries with a higher level of government effectiveness and a lower level of government intervention concerning business activities. We confirmed that on a macro level of institutional environments, Chinese firms prefer to invest through M&A in a country whose environment is institutionally similar with China, but their preference of choosing business friendly nations as the target country for M&A was also confirmed.
