Abstract
This article aims to elucidate why and how the strong prejudices against the Russian/Soviet armed forces were in the modern Western World. The Russian/Soviet army tends to be seen as an brutal organization far from being efficient by the contemporary Westerners. The nineteenth century saw that the nationalistic sentiment lead the German soldiers to regard the Russian Imperial army as a “colossus with feet of clay.” In their eye the Russian army was just the seemingly powerful but practically precarious gigantic one. After the Russian Revolution in 1917 Germany did not cast away a prejudice against the Red Army which replaced the Russian Imperial army in Soviet Russia. In 1930s the racist Nazi ideology came to prevail among the high-ranking Wehrmacht officers, who consider the Russian people to be an Asiatic Untermensch. Even after their defeat in the Russo-German War in 1945 they refused to admit that the Soviet army was a far cry from the inefficient brutal one. In the post-World War II era the United States armed forces began to regard the Soviet Union as their formidable rival and enemy and scrutinize the Soviet armed forces. Their perception of the Red army were strongly influenced by the former Wehrmacht officers who were in a position to co-operate with the research institutions in the U. S. army in order to have a lead in the fierce competition with the Soviet army during the Cold War. As a result the strong prejudices against the Soviet army lingered in the mind of the Western World.
