Abstract
This study empirically explores how the reorganization of global supply chains and changes in production conditions in China influence the production location strategies of Korean manufacturing firms operating in China. Specifically, it examines how supply chain instability and environmental changes in China affect decisions to relocate or maintain production bases through a multiple-response cross-analysis of survey data. The analysis reveals that, despite many firms perceiving a deterioration in production conditions in China, they are not considering relocating their production bases. This phenomenon is primarily observed among small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs), where structural constraints such as dependency on Chinese supply chains and insufficient information regarding relocation processes appear to play a significant role. These findings differ from previous studies, which suggested that firms would relocate their production bases due to changes in production conditions. This study emphasizes the need for policies tailored to the practical challenges faced by SMEs during the global supply chain restructuring phase. It proposes strengthening local operational capabilities through practical support, encouraging supply chain diversification, enhancing information platforms, and designing differentiated policies based on firm size.
