초록

Foreign direct investment(FDI) in China by Korean firms has greatly increased since the early 1990’s. However, the recent-deteriorating investment environment such as higher labor cost has not only shrunk the attractiveness of the potential investment in China, but caused withdrawal of the previous investments. This study analyzed factors related to the parents affecting foreign direct divestment (FDD) by Korean firms in China by setting up hypotheses based on the previous literature and by conducting empirical analysis using secondary data on Korean manufacturing subsidiaries divested from China during the period between 2008 to 2014. The research results show that among others, the parents’ monopolistic advantage, financial status, and size are the most significant determinants of FDD. This study may contribute to advancing theoretical research on FDD and formulating relevant firm and government policies on this issue.

Abstract

However, the recent-deteriorating investment environment such as higher labor cost has not only shrunk the attractiveness of the potential investment in China, but caused withdrawal of the previous investments. The research results show that among others, the parents’ monopolistic advantage, financial status, and size are the most significant determinants of FDD. This study may contribute to advancing theoretical research on FDD and formulating relevant firm and government policies on this issue.
