Abstract

This study aims to examine the musical adaptations of Lev Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina through three Russian-language musicals. Specifically, it analyzes the musical Anna Karenina (2000) composed by Vladislav Uspensky with a libretto by Finnish writer Jotarka Pennanen and Russian poet Tatyana Kalinina; the musical Anna Karenina (2010) composed by Mark Samoilov with a libretto by Gennady Tikhachyov; and the the musical Anna Karenina (2016) composed by Roman Ignatiev with a libretto by Yuliy Kim. Through a comparative analysis of these three adaptations, the study seeks to identify both the generic and formal particularities, as well as the distinctive interpretative approaches to the original novel. Although all three works are referred to as “musicals,” Uspensky’s Anna Karenina resembles an opera, Samoilov’s Anna Karenina is closer to a play, and Ignatiev’s Anna Karenina aligns more with a Broadway-style musical. This formal divergence highlights each work’s unique characteristics. Given that the musical as a genre occupies a space between opera and drama, these three adaptations offer a compelling overview of the formal diversity the genre can embody. Moreover, the three musicals also present divergent perspectives in terms of thematic focus and expressive style, offering different interpretations of the original work. This suggests that the study not only contributes to understanding how a classic is reimagined but also sheds light on the contemporary cultural and artistic trend of continuously generating new content across various media through reinterpretations of literary classics.
