Abstract

Germany is not only a leader in the field of sustainable development and climate change but also the world's second-largest model donor in the traditional ODA field as of 2020. What should be noted in the dynamics related to German development cooperation is that the country maintains a leading position even in the field of the so-called ‘sports for development’, which is recognized as a relatively new area of development cooperation. Under the overall leadership of BMZ, Germany is actively operating sports for development programs around the world and implementing efficient sports-related official development assistance (ODA). Specifically, as of April 2020, Germany has been carrying out 50 sports for development projects in 37 countries, and currently provides benefits to more than 1.2 million children and young people in sports facilities in South America, Africa, the West Balkans, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The purpose of this study is to provide implications for follow-up studies related to peace settlement through sports by discussing the background, development process, and results of Germany’s sports for development program in Colombia. Germany is actively using sports for development program to solve Colombia's deep-rooted disputes and the resulting enormous social costs. In other words, the program has been developed for the purpose of establishing peace in disputed areas, and has generated many positive ripple effects within the community from 2015 to 2021. In particular, sports for development programs are closely linked to general German development cooperation programs such as PROINTCAME and PROPAZ, supporting the return of forced migrants and the economic development of host communities and actively promoting peace construction in Colombian regional and local communities.
