Abstract

Electric vehicle batteries are dominated by China, South Korea, and Japan, with a negligible European presence. Batteries account for 40% of the added value of EVs, which means that crucial parts of the EV production value chain depend on Asian companies. In addition, securing the supply ecosystem for electric vehicle batteries is an urgent policy goal of the EU due to the unstable supply chain of raw materials due to geopolitical changes. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the battery recycling strategies of relevant EU member states and major companies, the main actors in these strategies, to explore Korean implications and cooperation possibilities. This study acknowledges the incompleteness of the analysis in that it is based on policy analysis and that developments in this field are still ongoing. However, this paper aims to present the value of the research in that it can serve as a foundation for future analysis.
