Abstract
Germany’s colonial policy began relatively late compared to other European maritime powers and came to an end with the loss of all its colonies following World War I. However, German coloniality was not confined to Africa and Asia; it also manifested in various forms in Eastern Europe. Among these, Danzig (present-day Gdańsk) stands out as a key example of colonial power structures within Europe. Danzig, a city with a complex historical trajectory shaped by German, Polish, and Hanseatic rule since the medieval period, became a focal point of geopolitical tension before and after World War I. It is one of the most prominent examples of layered coloniality in Europe. Following the end of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles designated Danzig as a Free City under the protection of the League of Nations. As a result, it occupied a unique political and economic position amidst the geopolitical tensions between the Republic of Poland and Germany. While officially proclaimed as an international neutral zone, Danzig functioned as a space through which Germany sought to maintain and reinforce its political and economic influence. This can be interpreted as a form of power analogous to traditional colonial rule. In particular, the dominance of the German population and the German-centered economic structure in Danzig aligns with the German Empire’s strategy of “internal colonization.” Consequently, the Free City is increasingly being reinterpreted as an “anti-colonial outpost” or a “colonial space within Europe.” Such coloniality extended beyond military and economic control to encompass structural domination through cultural hegemony and administrative systems. This paper thus seeks to analyze the continuity and reconfiguration of German coloniality by focusing on the political status and economic function of the Free City of Danzig. Furthermore, it aims to shed light on how the Free City functioned not merely as an international city but as a site of imperial power realignment within German imperial strategy, and how its colonial dynamics emerged within the conflictual relationship with the Polish Republic.
