이상의 삽화 분석 - 박태원의 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」 삽화의 화면 구성을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper draws a clue from the theory of Anne-Marie Christin, which emphasizes the importance of ‘support’ in the relationship between text and images, and try to examine holistically Yi Sang’s illustrations for Pak Taewon’s A Day in the Life of Kubo the Novelist. We first examine the meaning of this illustration in the context of the cultural history of the 1930s. The first is that this illustration is a product of a time when images have been inserted into the text space in large quantities and the readers' habits of reading have changed greatly. Second, the curriculum of the newspapers at that time required more detailed analysis than the works for the general public. Third, Yi Sang and novelist Pak Taewon shared a modernistic artistic view as a member of the art community called Nine People's Group. This paper analyzes the composition of the screen in two ways, the division and integration of the reading space to read the background on which the elements in the painting are placed. As for the division of the reading space, there are the following: first, the effect of screen division resulting from the ‘assemblage’ of the heterogeneous elements on one screen; second, the screen division through zoom-in or zoom-out as borrowing of cinematic technique; Third, the division of the background using black and white contrast. As for the integration of the reading space, there are the following: first, the effect of the integration obtained by attempting to overlap the background or reading space; second, visual luck and rhythm as a visual echo effect of images; third, the coexistence of characters(letters) and images. The segmentation and integration of such illustrations allows Yi Sang and Pak Taewon to understand how modern techniques have produced synergies. In addition, We expect that it will provide a good clue to analyzing the page composition principle of Yi Sang early period in which visuality and spatiality are prominent later.
