Abstract

By phenomenologically and hemeneutically reflecting about health, the fact that health is consists of not only physical comfort but also existential well is presented in this paper. Modern medicine achieved healing the disease, but in that course of treatment patient's experience of the disease is relatively beside the point. Thus the aim of this paper is that philosophical practice can also contribute to recovering health like medicine by presenting the newpossibility of one's self-understanding, that can heal the existential pain. Gadamer considers health as equilibrium by natural order. The health is usually concealed. We are not interested in our health because of its concealment. Health is presented. through its lack, the disease at last, According toGadamer, health is returned to the circulation of human, social, professional and familial life. At this point, we can notice that health is not limited to the absence of physical disease. Health contains the absence of not only the physical disease but also the existential pain. Modern medicine focuses on the physical disease but relatively not the existential pain of the patient. Thus philosophical counseling can contribute to the recovery of health by supplementing the limit of modern medicine, because it can listen to the experiment of the patient and change the self-understanding of the patient. The hermeneutics take a proper role to listen to the experience of the patient, as trying not explaining but understanding the patient. Furthermore through horizon fusion, the patient acquires the new possibility of interpretation to reinterpret already presented meaning in the situation. This possibility helps the patient to differently interpret, so the patient can resolve his problem. In this way, the practical dialog in philosophical counseling works on recovering health.
