Abstract

Is it possible to understand “the ill” as an identity? By posing this question, this article examines the liminal experiences of ill people who are neither disabled nor able-bodied, and questions the binary value systems which deny the particular embodiment of the ill. Futhermore, this question calls for abolishing the stigmas of invalidity and uselessness against the ill and integrating them fully into society, which requires combating the ideologies that determine our capability, temporality, productivity, and human values. The paper's structure is as follows: The definition of, and the need for, the concept of “the ill” will be discussed in chapter 1. Chapter 2 examines the complex relationship between “the ill” and “the disabled,” and investigates why the identity of disabled is insufficient in representing the circumstances of the ill, thus explaining the necessity of naming “the ill.” Chapter 3 explores new ways of thinking of “the ill” as an identity, drawing from queer theory's radical conceptualizations of identity. The last Chapter discusses how thinking of “the ill” as an identity will have new implications, values, and potentials at the personal, the social, and the epistemological level. In doing so, it will demand and open new possibilities for a different world.
