Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the overall aspects of Seoul songs in the 1990s and 2000s. Specifically, I reviewed the titles and texts of about 350 songs from this period. In Chapter 2, I mentioned the characteristics of Seoul songs revealed in the titles. The Seoul songs since the 1990s have utilized a wide variety of place names. However, there were also nominations that came out more frequently. In the 1990s, a representative name appearing in the Seoul songs was ‘Apgujung-dong’. On the other hand, the name of the place that frequently appeared in Seoul songs in the 2000s was ‘Cheonggyecheon’. This is a phenomenon reflected in society and culture of the time. In the 1990s, Apgujeong-dong emerged as a cultural space for younger generation and appeared frequently in songs. The ‘Cheonggyecheon’, which frequently appeared in the 2000s, is mainly related to the ‘Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project’. In other words, the interest that concentrated on Cheonggyecheon as a restoration project for Cheonggyecheon was reflected in popular songs. Next, I divided Seoul songs into two aspects and examined their respective aspects. "Seoul Song of Positive and Hope," and "Seoul Song of Negation and Despair." Among the Seoul songs that appeared in the 1990s and 2000s, there were a lot more negative descriptions than positively depicted ones on Seoul. Songs portraying Seoul positively have many songs that praise Cheonggyecheon after praising Seoul for the sake of restoration or Cheonggye Stream restoration project. However, among these songs, popular songs that have been admired so far have been difficult to find. Songs that reveal the negativity of a real life portrayal of Seoul's life can be found in so - called folk songs. Examples are the <rainy season in 1992, Jongno> and <Cheonggyecheon 8th>. These songs led to the empathy of the public by realistically depicting the poverty and hardships of life instead of vague greetings about Seoul. The songs of Seoul after the 1990s reveal a slightly different aspect from those of previous Seoul songs. There are relatively more songs that once portrayed negatively than songs that positively depicted Seoul. Although there are various Seoul and Seoul place names in songs, there are few songs that are popular in comparison with Seoul songs from previous periods. This is also linked to the change in Seoul itself. In other words, Seoul was unable to function as much as it did before, due to the phenomenon of backward poetry. Seoul songs are constantly emerging from early pop songs to current pop songs. Although the place names appearing in many times and the gaze to see Seoul are different, basically it is common to affirm or deny Seoul.
