김창기와 그가 활동했던 그룹 ‘동물원’은 한국 중음악사에서 매우 독특한 지위를 가진 음악인이자 음악 모임이다. 소심하고 나약한 청년들의 일상을 담백 하게 묘사한 그들의 음악은 흔히 아마추어리즘의 미덕을 발휘한 음악이라고 평 가되지만 그들이 거둔 음악적 성취를 이러한 평가를 뛰어 넘고 있다. 이 글에서 는 동물원의 음악세계를 일군 실질적 설계자로 김창기를 주목하고, 그의 노래를 ‘장소’와 ‘장소성’ 그리고 ‘장소애’라는 점에 주목하여 분석하고자 한다. 중음 악 분석에서 공간이나 장소에 한 논의는 주로 창작과 전승 등 주로 음악적 행 위나 실천이 이루어지는 장소에 집중해왔다. 이 연구에서는 일상적, 정서적 경험 이 축적된 ‘장소’, 기억이 각인된 ‘장소’에 주목함으로써, 장소를 통해 표현된 주 체의 정서, 지향, 가치를 탐색하고자 한다. 그의 노래에서는 주체의 처소로서의 ‘방’, 청년의 일상과 경험이 이루어지는 도시의 거리와 골목 등 특정한 장소에서 영감을 얻고, 장소에 얽힌 경험과 정서를 일정한 내러티브로 완성한 노래들이 주 를 이루고 있다. 이 연구에서는 김창기의 노래가 베이붐 세의 성장과 시적 징후가 서울이라는 도시의 ‘장소’를 통해 초점화되고 서사화된다는 점에 주목하 여, 김창기의 노래에 나타난 장소의 문제를 다루고자 한다. 동물원의 데뷔 앨범 에 실린 타이틀 곡 <거리에서>는 주체의 처소인 방에서 세상으로 나온 청년이 바라본 세상을 나직한 독백으로 그려내고 있다. 또한 ‘골목길’을 통해 유년기의 추억을 소환하고, 사라져 가는 것에 한 아쉬움, 변화하는 존재의 이면을 드러 내고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 김창기는 생의 주요한 국면을 관통한 장소를 서울의 특 정 지명을 소구한 노래로 그려내고 있다. 이 연구에서는 김창기의 노래에 나타난 장소를 유년기의 기억을 소환한 <혜화동>과 골목길, 청년기의 치열한 경험이 투 영된 신촌과 다운타운 그리고 중년의 일상이 영위되는 강남으로 나눠 살펴보고, 장소성과 장소애를 분석하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims at drawing up the critic review on the works of singer-songwriter Kim, Changki with a focus on the place and placeness. Kim, Changki and the band Dongmulwon he worked for occupy unique position in the fields of Korean popular music. Dongmulwon, a band with seven college students could be categorized the descendant of the campus band in terms of the music style and their attitude. Even though the music of the band Dongmulwon is appriciated as the demonstrating the virtues of amateurism, their musical acievement and impact on the Korean popular music scene could not be defined in this limits with the fact that the title song of their debut album <In the street> had big hit on the box office in the year of 1988 and their debut album 2nd album were selected as Korean 100 great albums in the year of 2008. This paper pays special attention to the fact that the designer who constructs the tone and manner of the Dongmulwon is singer-songwriter Kim, Changki and inqires into his characteristics of works focusing on the 'Place' and 'Placeness'. It is remarkable that his representative songs including <In the Street>, <Hyehwa-dong> and <In the subway station of City Hall> evoke the special feeling of place in the city and construct the narrative of the place. At this point, this paper tries to analyze how the place is composed and imagined and then how the main momentums of his life are projected into the place using the main concepts of human geography. To achieve this goal, this paper focused on the Hyehwa-dong and alleys in his childhood, Sinchon and downtown in his youth and finally Gangnam where daily life of the middle aged man is managed. Through this analysis, 'Topophillia' as the origin of his creaticity could be revealed.
