초록

이 글은 서구 사회학이 좁게는 퀴어 이론, 넓게는 섹슈얼리티 이론과 맺어 온 관계를 개괄한다. 최근 한국에는 성소수자와 성정체성 관련 이슈가 활발히 제기되고 있지만 이에 대한 ‘한국 사회학’의 학문적, 실천적 관심은 거의 부재하며, 사회학과 섹슈얼리티 이론 간 학문적 계보학에 대한 이해마저 부족한 현실이다. 섹슈얼리티는 사회를 조직하는 주요한 얼개이자 사회적 권력 관계와 연관된다. 성차별주의와 이성애중심주의 또한 독자적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 젠더, 계급, 인종, 연령 등 다양한 불평등의 기제들과 맞물려 작동한다. 이러한 문제의식에서 이 글은 고전사회학의 문제에서 출발해, 상징적 상호작용론과 낙인이론, 각본이론, 사회구성주의 등 다양한 사회학 이론들이 성소수자 연구에 미친 영향을 살피고, 퀴어 이론의 발전과 사회학 간 관계를 서구의 이론사와 얽힌 운동사, 운동사에 연루된 이론사를 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 사회학자들은 일찍부터 병리적 조건, 질병, 혹은 비정상적 행위로서 동성애를 보던 관점을 비판하면서 사회문화적 맥락 속에서 구성되는 성정체성에 관심을 가졌다. 이들은 당대의 운동과 긴밀히 개입하면서 선험적 욕망의 존재 자체에 질문하고, 자연적인 것이거나 변하지 않는 ‘진리’가 아니라 사회적 구성물로서 젠더와 섹슈얼리티를 탐구하면서, 근대적 성적 범주와 동성애/이성애 경계 자체를 허무는 지식과 차이(들)의 정치학을 여는데 커다란 기여를 해 왔다. 학계 내 통용되는 전통적 ‘이론’의 이성애중심주의와 성차별주의적 토대에 끊임없이 도전하면서 이론과 사회구조를 변혁시켜 왔던 것이다. 본 연구자들은 사회학과 섹슈얼리티 연구가 서로에게 제공하는 비판적 자원들에 대한 이상의 논의를 통해, 한국 사회학에서 섹슈얼리티 연구의 필요성과 가능성을 제기하고자 하였다.

Abstract

This article examines the relationships between/among sociology, queer theory, and sexuality theory. Recently in Korea, sexual minorities and sexual identity issues are actively raised. However, there is little academic and practical interest in Korean sociology and lack of understanding of academic genealogy on sexuality theory embedded in Sociology. Sexuality is one of the main social organizers associated with social power relations. Sexism and heterosexism can not exist independently, but work in conjunction with various mechanisms of social inequality such as gender, class, race, age, and so on. In this sense, this article, as starting from the problem of classical sociology, examines the various sociological theories such as symbolic interaction theory, stigma theory, script theory, and social constructivism in sex minority which have impacted both on theories and on social change. The relationship between queer theory and sociology is explored as well, tracing the Western movement history and theory. Despite long ignorance in the discipline in Sociology, some sociologists have been interested in the sexual identity constituted in the socio-cultural context, criticizing the perspective of homosexuality as pathological condition, illness, or abnormal behavior. Having keen relationship with the contemporary movement, they have questioned the ‘natural’ desire, constantly challenged heterosexualism and sexism within/outside of academia, and reconstructed the ideas of gender and sexuality as social constructs. They have made a great contribution to the opening of the politics of knowledge and difference(s) which deconstructed the modern sexual categories and binary boundary of homosexual/ heterosexual. Through discussions on the fruitful resources of sexual imagination provided by sociology, we seek to raise the necessity and possibility of sexuality research in Korean sociology.
