Abstract

Since the 18th century, European novels have changed their reading method from careful reading to extensive reading, and have taken a dominant position in world literature. Today, there has been a change in reading methods. This is because digital humanities has appeared. Every branch of liberal arts share the same reading method, "close reading." However, digital humanities use "distant reading." To read from afar is to look at the whole thing far away from the text. Moretti organized Graph, Map and Tree as visualization methods for reading from afar. Reading books digitally is not just a change in reading tools, but a change in reading way. It is a reading that is qualitatively different from the reading methods used by mankind. However, this is due to quantitative changes. One man's short life span is not enough to read a whole book. However, with the development of computers, it is possible to handle an entire book. (1) In other words, digital humanities is a shift from familiar reading to distant reading. It is not only about reading individual book(s), but a reading of the field in which the book stands. (2. Graph) This is a change from the canon to a reading method for the whole book. Furthermore, it is a shift from passive reading that accepts knowledge to essential reading. (3. Map) It's not a copy of the world, it's map-making reading. Moreover, it is a shift to a view of the world as a network of relationships rather than a collection of individual places. (4. Tree) It is a reading that breaks away from the platonic structure of the original Canon and the rest of the rival copy. In addition, trees have the potential to revive the value of dead branches in differentiated branches.
