Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explain how traditional text reading and data processing can coexist. It describes the characteristics of the dimension of reading and writing implied in data processing in a digital environment as opposed to how the text is traditionally read and written. This paper presents a few digital humanities research cases on classic literature which indicate how data-based readings inherits analog-based reading of classics. Contexts such as publishing online editions for works or collections, discovering and data curation of contextual elements of works, data analysis and visualization to analyze the meaning of works and opening and sharing of work data are examples of digital humanities approaches for classics. The transition from 'text' to 'data' in dealing with classics does not end the traditional reading-writing experience in analog environments, but rather serves as a channel that extends the experience and shares the understanding gained from it. Dealing with classics data in a digital environment is an inheritance and extension of classics text understanding in an analog environment, close to an archaeological approach which visualizes the various knowledge topography implied by text or relationships between text. The three-dimensional topography of knowledge created by various classics can be drawn when the deep thoughts of various researchers on the classics and the data reflecting those thoughts can be shared and linked online.
