본고는 인류세 시대 우리 인류의 근원적인 문제를 ‘실패를 인식하지 못하는 불감증’으로 진단한다. 매년 이어지는 사상 초유의 기후재난들과 생태재난들은 지금까지 우리 인류가 구축한 문명이 처참한 실패, 즉 6번째 대멸종을 향해 달려가고 있음을 강력하게 경고하고 있지만, 우리는 또 다시 첨단기술의 발전을 통해 새로운 진보나 우주 식민지 개척을 통한 진보의 새로운 도약을 꿈꾸며 이 경고를 외면한다. 디페시 차크라바티는 이를 ‘지구적인 것’과 ‘행성적인 것’의 혼동으로 야기되는 불감증이며, 이를 넘어서기 위해서 우리는 인류세란 인간이 이제 지질학적 행위자가 되었음을 인식하는 것으로부터 출발해야 한다고 촉구한다. 지구를 다른 행성과 다름없는 하나의 행성으로 간주하고, 이 행성의 거주가능성(habitability)을 고려하면서 대안을 모색해야 한다는 말이다. 시노하라 마사타케는 동일본 대지진이 남긴 파멸의 흔적들을 성찰하면서, 우리의 실패들을 적나라하게 고찰할 수 있는 방법들을 궁리한다. 동일본 대지진이 남긴 폐허는 지나간 시간이 아니라 도래하는 시간의 상징일 가능성이 더 높기 때문이다. 실패를 성찰한다는 것은 패배주의를 의미하지 않는다. 하지만 거짓된 희망으로 우리의 실패를 외면하는 것을 의미하는 것도 아니다. 실패를 성찰한다는 것은 그 실패들을 통하여 우리를 새롭게 재구성해 나아가는 것을 의미하며, 이런 맥락에서 인류세 시대의 우리의 실패들을 성찰하는 것은 매우 중요하다.
Abstract
This paper diagnoses one of the fundamental problems of our humanity in the Anthropocene era as 'insensitivity to failure'. The unprecedented climatic and ecological disasters we have been experiencing in each year have been strongly warning that the civilization built by mankind so far is heading towards a catastrophic failure, that is, the 6th mass extinction. However, dreaming of a new leap in progress through the advanced development of brilliant new technologies or through space colonization, we ignore this warning. Depesh Charkravarti diagnoses this ignorance as insensitivity due to the confusion between ‘the global’ and ‘the planary’, urging that we start by recognizing the fact that the Anthropocene means that humans now have become geological actors. This means that the earth should be regarded as a planet no different from other planets, and alternatives should be sought in considering the habitability of this planet. While reflecting on the traces of destruction left by the East Japan Mass Earthquake, Shinohara Masatake ponders over ways to see our failures straight. This is because the ruins left by the East Japan Mass Earthquake are more likely to be symbols of the time to come, not the time that has passed. Reflecting on failure does not mean defeatism. But it also doesn't mean turning a blind eye to our failures with false hopes. Reflecting on failure means reconstructing ourselves anew through those failures, and in this context, it is very important to reflect on our failures in the Anthropocene era.
