The North Korean Perception and Response to the South Korean Discourse Regarding a Sudden Change in North Korea

초록

South Korean discourse on sudden change in North Korea has been a decisive core issue for inter-Korean relations. During the early 1990s, the collapse of the Soviet bloc started the first sudden change discourse in South Korea and by the mid-1990s the demise of Kim Il Sung, the chronic economic woes and famine in the DPRK renewed the second round of debate. In 2008, the health issues of Kim Jong Il, the economic crisis, and famine signaled the third round of sudden change in North Korea becoming a topic of societal discourse. However, the third sudden change discourse that had arisen from Kim Jong Il’s health concerns was different in terms of the sensitive nature of North Korean response while conducting a series of aggressive measures. The goal of this research is to explore these different patterns by analyzing North Korea’s perception and response to the South Korean sudden change discourse.

Abstract

South Korean discourse on sudden change in North Korea has been a decisive core issue for inter-Korean relations.
