한국 사회에서 인터넷은 무엇보다도 이용자들의 뜨거운 관심과 열광에 힘입어 성장해왔다. 한국 사회가 인터넷을 수용하는 속도는 다른 어떤 사회와 비교해보아도 빨랐고 이로 인해 사회 전체가 공적, 사적으로 인터넷에 의존하는 경향 역시 강하게 나타났다. 이 글은 한국 인터넷 10년을 돌아보고 그 발전 경로와 인터넷이 만들어낸 문화적 지형의 특성을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 이를 오프라인과 분명히 구별되지만 여전히 오프라인과 동조화되고 있는 인터넷 공간의 형성이라는 시각에서 살펴보고자 한다. 인터넷이 만들어내는 여러 가지 ‘디지털 현상’은 나라마다 차이를 보이고 있으며 단순히 기술격차나 인터넷 보급률의 차이로만은 환원될 수 없는 특성들을 보여주고 있다.이 논문에서는 다양한 인터넷 관련 서비스 이용자의 인구사회학적 특성과 문화적 특성을 실증적으로 살펴봄으로써 한국 인터넷의 문화적 특성을 유추해보고자 했다.
Abstract
The remarkable growth of Internet in Korean society can be explained by the enthusiasm of users. The speed of Internet acceptance is higher than that of any other countries. This paper aims to look back over the past ten years' Korean Internet and to investigate the cultural topography drawn up by the Internet. During the last decade, everyday life of Korean people tend to be dependent more and more on the Internet. As the digital phenomena differ from one country to another, irreducible to the technological divide or to the gap in internet penetration, we focus on the configuration of Korean cyberspace, distinguishable from, but in sync with the real space at the same time. In this paper, we try to show that socio-cultural characteristics such as age, education level and pattern of leisure disposition are of crucial importance relative to the use or non-use of a given internet service and th provide foundation of specific cultural trait.
