Abstract
The goal of this study is two-folds: first, this study examines similarities and differences in informatization circumstance and internet use between South Korea and Japan and, second, examines how internet-based communication influences social relations in everyday life. The findings go as follows. First, results show distinct activities that South Korean internet users enjoy on the web. South Korean internet users spent more time and cost than those Japanese internet users spent on the web. Second, both South Korean and Japanese people considered face-to-face interaction the most important way of communication to maintain a relational closeness. It is also worth noting that frequency of each specific media use and perceived importance of the media are highly correlated. Even if internet-based communication started the development of a new personal interaction, this finding gives an implication that people prefer face-to-face interaction (offline interaction) to online interaction. Third, in both South Korea and Japan, results reveal increasing use of internet in communication. However, this change does not lead to decrease in face-to-face interaction (offline interaction) and decrease in telephone use; rather telephone use is increasing. In conclusion, in spite of qualitative difference in degree of internet use and preferred media, South Korean society and Japanese society have commonality in that internet use contributes to generating and maintaining social capital that originates from social relations.
