‘배경지식의 규범’을 적용한 『빨강머리 앤』 번역 비평: 문학번역과 비평, 그 활성화를 꿈꾸며

Abstract

The role of a translated literary work is to create the same pleasure for target readers as the original work did for the source readers. Fidelity to the original in literary translation and readability helping target readers to easily read the translated work have been underlined in theoretical and practical translation fields. The two, fidelity and readability, have also been appraisal standards for literary translation. Recently the advent of globalization and the advanced internet led to the popularization of the criticism of translated texts. Many readers who are involved in reviewing translated texts mostly point out mistakes in a translation. It could be connected to the contraction of demand for translations and then a big reduction in the size of translation in near future would be expected. Within this context, appropriate and valuable appraisal standards for criticising translated works are urgently required to be prepared in this field. Thus this paper introduces a new valuation basis, ‘cultural background knowledge,’ making up for the weak points in the existing two criteria, fidelity and readability. Then to go over the usefulness and validity of this new standard, four translated texts are reviewed with it. The literary work under translation review is Anne of Green Gables written by Montgomery, a famous Canadian writer. It has plenty of cultural things and expressions giving more pleasure if conveyed to readers.
