본 논문은 이주자의 문화예술 활동을 통해 그들의 사회적 참여 가능성을 탐구하며, 특히 한국에서 이주자가 예술을 통한 정치적 표현인 ‘아티비즘(artivism)’으로 나아갈 수 있는 가능성을 다루고 있다. 이주자들이 단순한 경제적 기여자가 아닌, 자신들의 정체성을 표현하고 사회적으로인정받을 수 있는 주체로서 역할을 해야 함을 주장하며, 이를 위해 문화예술이 중요한 역할을 할수 있음을 강조한다. 이주자들이 주체적으로 문화예술 활동에 참여할 수 있는 공간과 사회적 인프라를 제공하는 비영리 문화예술 단체인 아시아미디어컬처 팩토리(이하 AMC팩토리)의 활동을 주요 연구대상으로 분석하였다. 아티비즘의 주요 특성인 실천력 있는 상상력과 공동참여의방식은 AMC팩토리에서도 나타나고 있는데 이는 물리적 공간의 생산에 크게 영향 받고 있는 것으로 보인다. 참여하는 이주자들이 지속적으로 바뀌어도 단체가 확보한 공간의 운영은 그들의상상력이 교환되고 공동 작업이 실현 가능한 물리적 기반을 제공한다. 이주자들은 AMC 팩토리를 통해 주류 사회로의 일방적인 문화적 동화나 주류사회가 주도하는 타자화된 재현에서 벗어나 이주자의 현실과 이에 대한 생각과 감정을 반영한 창작 활동을 통해 이주 문제에 대해서도 정치적으로 참여하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper explores the possibilities of migrants’ social engagement through cultural and artistic activities, and in particular, the possibility of migrants moving towards ’artivism’ - political expression through art - in South Korea. It argues that migrants should not only be economic contributors but also act as subjects who can express their identity and be socially recognized, and emphasizes the important role that culture and arts can play in this regard. It focuses on the activities of the Asian Media Culture Factory (AMC Factory), a non-profit cultural organization that provides a space and social infrastructure for migrants to participate and express their culture artistically, and shows how migrants do not simply reproduce traditional culture, but also engage in various contemporary creative activities through film, music, and theater, and further engage with the issue of migration in Korean society. Through the AMC Factory, migrants are engaging in new artistic practices that transcend the cultural differences between their home countries and Korea, and in doing so, they are creating their own unique cultural expressions, breaking away from the assimilation and othering required by mainstream society. This is presented as an important way to realize the politics of recognition in the process of negotiating with mainstream society to redefine migrants’ citizenship.
