The purpose of this study is to delve into the meaning of death represented in Death with Interruptions written by José Saramago. In order to explain the meaning of death in modern/postmodern age, I adopt the opposite terms, “dis-enchantment” and “re-enchantment.” Besides these two polar view points, I examine Jaspers’ definition of “Existenz” to analyze the meaning of death suspensions, which occurred twice in this novel. In conclusion, I show that while the modern secular society has been trying to disenchant all kinds of the unknown, including death and dying, Saramago’s Death with Interruptions gives a chance for readers to rethink the fact that we are still aspiring to the unrepresentable, or things beyond our language, such as death, spirituality for our truthful life.
