Abstract
The global economy faced a significant downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And the high inflation became a major problem as the economy rebounding. While differences in inflation rates between countries were minimal before the pandemic, they have since increased substantially. The standard deviations of inflation in OECD countries have now returned to levels last seen in the 1990s. Through principal component analysis, a global factor influencing inflation in OECD countries was identified. The countries’ different sensitivities to this global factor have played a more significant role in the increased inflation volatility than idiosyncratic shocks following the pandemic. Notably, countries with inflation rates sensitive to the global factor tend to have higher inflation rates compared to others.
