초록
This paper analyzes how the humanist historian Robert Gaguin treated the history of his native region, Artois-Flandres, in his Compendium de origine et gestis Francorum. Gaguin made an active choice of his identity by residing permanently in Paris without returning home, and by writing a French history in order to glorify the kingdom of France. Gaguin’s intention for incorporating the history of Artois-Flandres region is particularly evident in the way he composes his history book. Gaguin argues in various ways that this northern border region was and is part of France and French history. Firstly, the engraving frontispiece on the front page of the book includes the Flemish blazon, clearly manifesting the intention to incorporate Flanders as a territory of French kingdom. He also argues that this border region’s history is a part of French history by inserting a list of Flemish counts’ genealogy in the midst of chapter 10. In addition, when Gaguin describes Louis XI’s conquest war in the northern border region in 1477, he specifically highlights the resistance and surrender of the people of Arras, thus bringing it into the center of narrative. The image of Arras’ resistance against Louis XI seems to be reminiscent of the relationship between Gaulois and Caesar in his translation of the Gallic Wars.
