초록

Europe has always been and remains “very much a continent of regional identities.” My interest in German regional history of Rheinlands was prompted by the increasing significance of regions in Europe and the emergence of regional historiography as a distinct subdivision within German historiography. But the regional historiography in Rheinlands from the beginning lied in the context of national historiography. The nationalism evident in the attitude of German historians was grounded in their concern for regional history. The peculiar places of the regional history in Rheinlands were especially determined by certain political trauma from which it suffered through the events of 1871, 1918, 1933, and 1945. So the regional historians did not hesitate to link the history of Rheinland with the German national historiography. But there was a tradition of regional historians who tried to concentrate in the singularities of regions. In postwar Germany it should be noted that while the “twilight existence” of regional history drew public attention, the significance of nations tended to lose its overriding presence in the practice of history. In addition the importance of regions is in the limelight, as regions in Europe have recently obtained their own political meanings. It also becomes increasingly remarkable not only as a complement to national history but also as a new place which has not entirely identified with a nation-state.
