Abstract

This study examined how the sense of discrimination against language was created through the Battle of Okinawa and the dialect controversy. I tried to understand the reason why the dialect controversy began and the issue of dialect discrimination related to the Battle of Okinawa. In modern times, the Okinawa dialect has grown into a single expression code in recognition of its cultural value. However, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was found that the Okinawa dialect was a language that should disappear and was an obstacle to the integration of the nation. For Okinawa residents who suffer a lot of inconvenience and discrimination, maintaining a dialect means enduring inequality. As a result of implementing the policy to encourage standard language, it was found that Okinawa residents themselves, not from others, moved to reject the Okinawa dialect because of education that had been injected that KOKUGO was essential to advance to a national language. For the government, which had dreamed of becoming a country through war, it was found that local languages such as the Okinawa dialect were unnecessary languages and were beings that caused conflict and discrimination. In this way, it was confirmed that external factors and situations were deeply related to the formation of the identity of Okinawa dialect speakers through research on the Battle of Okinawa and dialect controversy.
