초록

Censorship of Chinese government aims to instill Confucian view of morality and pursue political stability and harmony of the society. The items censored by the Chinese authorities include the anti-social and non-scientific themes such as sex, violence, obscenity, religion, superstition, gambling, drinking, drug abuse, and crime. In this regard, political issues traducing Communist Party or criticizing the Chinese political system are certainly subject to the censorship. Foreign films which are one of the mass media are also censored. Foreign films playing a role of cultural communicator are strictly regulated in accordance with the censorship criteria, which can lead to deletion or changes in the content and lines. Based on the censorship currently conducted in China this study verifies that there is difference between the official subtitles and fansubs. And in case that there is no difference found between them, it is then examined whether the concept of self-censorship can explain why. To this end, this paper will look at the translation history of foreign films in China briefly first and then censorship confining it to media censorship and self-censorship. Third, censored foreign film cases imported to China will be presented, and connection between translation and censorship will be examined. Fourth the translated official subtitles for release postulated to be censored in terms of foreign film translation and the fansubs not censored will be compared and analyzed. Through comparison between two subtitles in China the impact of censorship on subtitle translation is illuminated with basis of difference found between the translated official subtitles which is expected to be censored and the unofficial fansubs not to be censored. If there is no difference caused by censorship, the phenomenon is interpreted by applying the perspective of self-censorship.
