심훈 문학과 3․1운동의 ‘기억학’

Abstract

This paper focuses on the fact that Sim Hun's literary work started with his personal experiences of the March 1st Independence Movement (1919), and explores the equating of his literary achievements with the 'Memoryology of the March 1st Independence Movement.' To Sim Hun, who was incarcerated for his involvement in the March 1st Independence Movement, his time in jail was an ecstatic community experience, one that he cherished as a 'holy and sublime experience.' This paper found out that his passion for the 'recollection' of experiences underlies both the intense, tough poetic language of his poetry and his depiction of the healthy heroism demonstrated by the characters in his novels. The paper also discovered that his literary actions centered on 'recollection' are linked to the artistic spirit of Nietzsche and Van Gogh, and that he presents 'memory sharing' as a means of consolidating the attitudes required to overcome the dismal reality in his narrative of the 'sacrifice' that had to be made by the characters in his novels. As such, it may be concluded that Sim Hun created his literary world on the basis of 'Memoryology of the March 1st Independence Movement' with the aim of reminding people of the movement and encouraging them to inherit its spirit, at a time when the sacred independence movement, in particular, was being distorted and independence activism, in general, was being suppressed by Japanese colonialists.
