This paper is the first serious attempt at studying Song Young’s novel Before This Spring is Over(1937). The novel has received little attention from scholars who study Song’s literary achievements. The lack of interest in Before This Spring is Over can be explained by the fact that scholars have mainly focused on Song as a playwright until now and also because this work was a popular novel that was serially published on the daily newspaper Maeil Sinbo. This work is important, however, in understanding the writer as it was written during Song’s stay of execution after his arrest and therefore, falls into the category of conversion novel. This paper aims to read this work as a proletarian literature that responds to the ‘Order to remove Ideology’ while focusing on the two important events of the demolition of residential buildings according to ‘Kyoungseong Street Planning’ and ‘Yahak(the night school)’ movement. I sincerely hope that this paper will trigger further discussion on Song Young’s novels in addition to his plays.
