Abstract
This study reexamined the relationship between the depth of vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension ability with Korean learners of English as a foreign language. A total of 72 second-year high school students participated in the study. Their reading comprehension ability was assessed by a standardized English academic reading test, and their size and depth of vocabulary knowledge were measured by the Vocabulary Levels Test and the Depth of Vocabulary Knowledge Measure, respectively. The main findings are as follows: The correlation between the size and depth of vocabulary was significant, but of relatively small magnitude; The proportion of reading comprehension ability predicted by the size of vocabulary knowledge was large, while little was added when the depth of vocabulary knowledge was entered as another predictor; When the size of vocabulary knowledge was controlled, the depth of vocabulary knowledge did not predict reading comprehension ability to a significant degree.
