Abstract

Scholars frequently attribute Petrarch’s rediscovery of Cicero’s letters to the beginning of the Italian Renaissance in the 14th century, but this implies a literary revival based on the revival of Roman culture. However, the Italian Renaissance, which was actually based on ancient Greek and Roman culture, began when Byzantine scholars moved to Italy in earnest. This study examined the activities of Byzantine scholars in Italy, how Italians tried to accept and create new cultures through imitation, and what perceptions they had of Byzantine scholars. On other hand, it examined how Byzantine scholars perceived Italians in their treatment and tried to spread their academic knowledge.
