Abstract

The background and causes of conflicts in the Middle East are diverse, encompassing political, military, and ideological tensions. To understand the situation in the region in a fundamental and comprehensive manner, two key areas of analysis must be considered. The first is an examination of the historical and ongoing sectarian conflict between Sunni and Shia Islam, while the second involves an analysis of the polarization between the Saudi-led Sunni community and the Iran-centered Shia community. The media serves as a mirror, reflecting society and through this process, it can also drive social change. In particular media in the Gulf states, under monarchical systems, is predominantly controlled by the state and government, with the interests of the rulers often taking precedence over the public’s right to know. This control results in a situation where the intentions of the authorities overshadow the public’s access to information. The findings of this study reveal that the coverage of two key issues—the execution of Shia clerics in Saudi Arabia and the diplomatic rift and subsequent normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar—differed significantly between Saudi and Qatari media. This disparity in coverage highlights how political conflicts are often framed through the lens of sectarian tensions, a pattern that can be confirmed through a detailed analysis of media framing.
