Abstract
This paper examines the evolving role of the viewer in contemporary art, tracing the shifts from abstract art to more recent works. While the traditional role of the viewer was to interpret the artist’s intent and expression, contemporary viewers emerge as active participants who generate meaning and content from the artwork, often producing their own derived outcomes. The study explores how, since the advent of abstract art, viewers have transitioned from mere recipients to performative and productive agents in the art experience. This shift reflects changes not only in the methods of art creation but also in how art is perceived and the elevated status of the viewer in contemporary art. The paper argues that art appreciation is no longer a passive exercise in understanding the artist's intent but involves the viewer's active agency and personal post-production. By analyzing these changing roles, the study highlights the reciprocal nature of contemporary art and proposes a new viewer-centric literacy necessary for engaging with contemporary art works. This new literacy underpins the dynamic interaction between artist, artwork, and viewer, fostering a space for mutual communication and creative exchange.
