본 연구는 부산 지역 대학교에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 10명을 대상으로, 지역사회 자원봉사활동 참여 경험이 사회적 자본 형성과 정주화 과정에 어떠한 의미를 갖는지 현상학적 방법을 적용하여 심층 분석하였다. 질적 자료는 Colaizzi의 7 단계 분석 절차에 따라 수집⋅해석하였으며, 그 결과 유학생의 자원봉사 경험은단순한 비교과 활동을 넘어 사회적 관계망 형성, 문화 적응, 자아 성장, 시민 정체성 전환 등 다층적인 변화를 이끄는 핵심 경로로 나타났다. 참여자들은 봉사 경험을 통해 지역사회 구성원으로서의 소속감과 심리적 안정감을 강화하였고, 언어 및문화 이해 능력과 자기효능감을 신장시켰으며, 점차 시민적 역할 주체로서의 자각과 지속적 기여 의지를 내면화하였다. 이러한 결과는 자원봉사가 외국인 유학생의사회적 자본 축적과 정주 의지 강화, 사회통합의 촉진에 실질적으로 기여할 수 있음을 보여주며, 향후 유학생 지원정책 및 지역사회 통합 프로그램의 실천적 기반마련에 중요한 함의를 제공한다.
Abstract
This study explores the lived experiences of international students engaging in community-based volunteer activities in Busan, South Korea, using a phenomenological approach. Ten international students enrolled in a local university participated in this study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed according to Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological method. The findings identified four core themes that characterize the students’ volunteer experiences: formation of social relationships and a sense of belonging, cultural understanding and language adaptation, personal growth and enhanced self-efficacy, and the development of civic identity and sustained participation. These volunteer experiences contributed not merely to fulfilling academic requirements but also to forming bridging social capital, expanding intercultural networks, and reinforcing psychological stability. Participants gradually internalized their roles as proactive contributors to the local community beyond that of passive outsiders. The study reveals that volunteer participation provides international students with an integrative platform to construct social connections, embody civic responsibility, and experience community inclusion. These findings offer practical implications for higher education institutions and local governments seeking to promote sustainable models of multicultural integration and retention of international students at a regional level.
