Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to examine a certain aspect in the exchanges between China and the Western world through James Legge, a missionary who was active in China. He translated a number of Chinese classical works into English and set the groundwork for Chinese studies in the Western world. This paper focused on Legge’s translation of the Four Books, especially on his translation of certain terms, to consider Legge’s perception on Confucian ideologies and the spread of Christianity based on such perception. First, this study analyzed the translations of “yin(仁)” and “chun tzu(君子).” These are the key concepts in Confucianism and are also the very terms that Legge found difficult to translate, since there are no corresponding words in English. Legge used “benevolence” and “virtue” to translate “yin(仁),” and the translations differ by text. This also affected the translation of “chun tzu(君子),” which is the ideal person with the quality of “yin(仁).” Second, this paper analyzed the usage of the Christian term “God” in the translation of the Four Books. Legge explained the traditional religious ideas in China by relating “shangdi(上帝)” in the Four Books with “God.”
