초록
We will start by reviewing the Cervantine literary techniques used by Galdós uses in Fortunata y Jacinta to illustrate the strong relationship that exists between Man and Nature, and in particular, how Nature shapes the personality of this novel’s characters and also determines their fates. In the next two sections, we will see the relation that exists between novel-history and human-history. We use the word History referring to the real History of Spain in this period (the XIX century), versus the word story (which is fictitious) of the novel. What Galdós makes us believe is that this relationship is not a relation of opposed terms, but on the contrary, one story flows inside the other History and both can interact and modify the other. We will provide various excerpts that show how Galdós intertwines the story of the novel and the lives of its characters with the bigger historic picture in which they are immersed. By doing so in such a masterful way, he creates in Fortunata y Jacinta what many experts consider to be not only his best novel but also one of the most representative of the realism-naturalism style.
Abstract
We will start by reviewing the Cervantine literary techniques used by Galdós uses in Fortunata y Jacinta to illustrate the strong relationship that exists between Man and Nature, and in particular, how Nature shapes the personality of this novel’s characters and also determines their fates.
