20세기 전반에 걸쳐 학계의 표준으로 영향력을 미친 ‘언어적 전회’에 정면으로 대립하며 등장한 ‘물질적 전회’는 신유물론, 사변적 실재론, 객체지향존재론,행위자-네트워크 이론 등 여러 이론들을 포괄하는 흐름이지만 언어와 인식의 ‘감옥’ 곧 ‘상관주의’ 에서 벗어날 것을 주장하는 기본 취지를 공유한다. 이런 공통의 문제의식은 물질, 사물, 실재, 객체 등 존재론적 주제로 새롭게 정향하도록 이끄는데, 여기에는 그간 주목받지 못한 물질(객체·사물·실제)의 생기와 역량과 행위자성을 발견하는 작업이 수반된다. ‘평평한 존재론’을 근거로 비인간 물질은 인간과 동등한 존재론적 위상을 갖는것으로 간주되고, 인간중심주의가 주요 표적이 되어 인간은 독립적 주체이기는커녕언제나비인간과의네트워크속에존재해왔음이 강조된다.다른 한편물질의성격과 역량을 구체적으로 어떻게 규정하는가, 특히 개별적인 실체인가 관계인가 하는 점을둘러싸고 이들 이론의 내부적 차이가 뚜렷하고 반대편 입장은 종종 ‘환원주의’로 비판받는다. 물질적 전회를 둘러싼 또 하나의 쟁점은 그 이론들이 숨은 표적으로 삼고있는 마르크스주의적 유물론과의 차이와 관련된다. 물질적 전회 이론들은 마르크스주의를 여전히 인간중심주의적인 주객 이원론에 머물러 있다고 비판하는 반면, 마르크스주의의 역사적 유물론 또는 변증법적 유물론을 옹호하는 편에서는 물질적 전회이론들의 마르크스주의 비판이 사실과 부합하지 않는다는 점을 특히 ‘총체성’ 개념에대한새로운이해를통해반박한다. 물질적전회이론들은 변화하는물질세계의여러도전과 과제에 대응할 정치적 잠재력을 가졌다고 주장하지만, 기후 위기와 자본주의등 현재 우리가 직면한 가장 절박한 물질적 위기에 이 이론들이 더 적절한 정치적 답을 제시한다고 확신하기는 어렵다.
Abstract
The ‘material turn’ emerged as a reaction to the ‘linguistic turn’ which exerted a major influence in the realm of discourse throughout the 20th century. The material turn comprises a variety of theories, such as new materialism, speculative realism, object-oriented-ontology, and actor-network theory, all of which share as their primary purpose escaping from the ‘prison-house’ of language and epistemology, or what is often called ‘correlationism.’ This purpose requires an ontological reorientation, which, in turn, entails a new understanding of the vitality, power, and agency of nonhuman materials/ objects/things as expressed by the notion of a ‘flat ontology.’ With this understanding, humans turn out to have always existed in networks with non-humans, and have thus never been independent subjects, so that anthropocentrism has become a shared theoretical target. There are, however, significant differences among these theories, One prominent difference concerns how to characterize materiality or objectness: whether things exist primarily as (individual) substance or in relation. Another point in dispute refers to Marxist historical and dialectical materialism, which for some is a hidden theoretical target of the material turn. Thus, theories of the material turn frequently criticize Marxist materialism as being confined to an anthropocentric subject-object dualism, whereas Marxists seek to refute this charge through a revised elucidation of the concept of totality. Proponents of the material turn claim enhanced political potential to cope with urgent issues and challenges in the material world, but it is unclear whether any of these theories can offer more plausible solutions for today’s most serious and pressing material crises, as caused by climate change and capitalism.
