Abstract
This paper highly values the contributions of New Materialisms, which have been emerging as a new paradigm of thought grounded in recent developments in natural sciences and scientific technologies. First, they serve as exemplary models for practicing transversal thinking across the domains of natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. Second, through the “Turn to Materiality” or the rehabilitation of the material world, New Materialisms generate positive effects by shedding new light on subaltern subjects who have been alienated and excluded under the names of culture, subjectivity, reason, and rationality since the advent of modernity. However, this paper takes a different stance from the New Materialisms in two key respects, grounding its argument in Engels’ Dialectics of Nature. First, this paper opposes the “anti-anthropocentrism” of New Materialisms by grounding its argument in Engels’ materialism. While recognizing both nature and humans as material beings belonging to a shared ecological sphere, Dialectics of Nature approaches the two from a stratified perspective. In this sense, Engels’ work remains a valid and valuable reference for exploring pathways toward the symbiosis and coexistence of humans and nature. Second, this paper’s critique of New Materialisms is directly connected to the first point. Discourses such as political ecology or zoe-egalitarianism, which are founded on the deconstruction of the human/nonhuman boundary and the dismantling of anthropocentrism, fail to adequately identify the subjects morally, politically, legally, and institutionally responsible for today’s ecological catastrophe. This paper argues that New Materialisms, in their excessive commitment to overcoming “human exceptionalism,” risk either diluting the root causes of ecological crises or blurring the distinction between the primary and secondary agents of global capitalist exploitation. In doing so, they run the risk of ideologically justifying the current situation. To revitalize ecological discourse and realize a politically grounded ecology, this paper proposes the Marxian and Engelsian concept of the consistent material metabolism between humans and nature.
