Abstract
In this article, we have set up Lazarillo de Tormes as discourse to unveil the truth of the case of Lazarillo, and analyze the object of ‘bread’ which plays a central role in this discourse, using the rhetorical genre theory. On the basis of his argument, we tried to analyze the three arguments of hunger, greed, and hypocrisy that were used to maximize the effect of persuasion. The word 'bread' appears only in the first three chapters of this work and is not mentioned thereafter. From the beginning to third chapter, these parts take a big part of the whole work. Lazarillo’s childhood life is elaborated in detail, but as the life after that is abruptly omitted, the progress of the narrative becomes faster. If we interpret this in relation to the rhetorical genre, he mentions in detail about the advantages in the discourse and omits disadvantageous or inappropriate contents. Through the process of amplification and omission, Lazarillo rationalizes that he is not responsible for the affair of his wife and the priest, but rather that he is a victim. As we have seen, the ‘bread’ is the strong test with which the protagonist defends his position and reveals the problems of his surroundings. Through this, the protagonist proves that he is forced to live a rogue life by growing up in a difficult environment from his childhood and experiencing extreme hunger in meeting with three masters. In Lazarillo de Tormes the judicial genre is a major, but the debate and epidemic genre also appear to play a big role in persuading readers. In the course of our research, we have found that the theories of Aristotle, ancient Greek, Roman rhetoric, and Spanish rhetoric of the Golden Age were faithfully reflected in this work.
