이 글은 유교와 민주주의의 관계를 새로운 시각에서 분석한다. 서양 중심의 기존의 ‘표준 민주주의’의 이론과 현실의 한계도 드러났고, 비서방권에서의 민주주의의 다양 한 시도도 주목을 받아왔다. 이렇듯 민주주의에 대한 논의의 기본 구도가 변했기 때 문에 유교와 민주주의의 관계 역시 새롭게 분석할 수 있다. 이 글은 먼저 민주주의 이 론 내부의 흥미로운 자기 인식의 변화 과정을 ‘민주주의 담론의 짧은 역사와 긴 역사’ 라는 표제로 살펴본다. 이어 이러한 변화 과정에서 넓게 확장된 민주주의론의 근거와 유교가 만나는 지점을 유교 대동론과 민주주의의 관계를 중심으로 살펴본다. 유교 민 주성의 핵심 영역이 유교 대동론과 연관되어 있기 때문이고, 아울러 유교 대동론은 인류 보편사를 관통하는 민주주의의 깊은 기원을 암시해 주는 함의가 풍부하다. 민주 주의를 근본에서부터 다시 생각하게 하는 상황에서 유교 대동론이 미래 민주주의의 발 전에 기여할 바 크다. 분석 과정에서 나종석의 ‘대동민주주의’ 연작을 함께 검토한다.
Abstract
This article analyzes the relationship between Confucianism and democracy from a new perspective. It examines the standard theories of democracy, as understood by the Western world, which have limitations in their real-world application, and also considers various democratic experiments in non- Western regions. It argues that the basic framework for discussions about democracy has changed, and so the relationship between Confucianism and democracy can also be analyzed in a new light. Under the title “A Short History and a Long History of Democratic Discourse,” this article looks at the interesting process of self-awareness within democratic theory. It then explores how the expanded foundations of democratic theory intersect with Confucianism, focusing on the relationship between democracy and the Confucian concept of ‘Daedong (Great Harmony).’ Indeed, Daedong is central to the Confucian understanding of democracy, and there are rich implications for the deep origins of democracy in the universal history of humankind. In a situation where democracy is being rethought from its roots, the Confucian concept of ‘Daedong’ has much to contribute to the future development of democracy. This article also reviews Na Jong-seok’s works on “Daedong Democracy” as part of the analysis.
