이 글은 현재 한국인의 행복한 삶을 위해 논의할 필요가 있다고 여겨지는 유교 민주화론에 대한 성찰이다. 다시 말해, 유교 민주화론은 유교적 전통을 보유하고 있으면서, 민주주의를 지향하는 현재의 한국사회가 맞닥뜨린 여러 난제들을 해결하기 위한 과정에서 음미되어야할 논의라고 생각한다. 나는 여기서 특별히 유교와 민주주의의 융합이 민주주의 자체의 발전을 위해서도 필요하다고 주장하는 몇 몇 정치 철학자들의 견해를 살펴보고, 그에 대한 나름의 평가를 하려고 한다. 유교 민주주의론은 유교 전통이 살아 있는 동아시아지역에는 전통과 현대 문화의 구체적 융합 방법을, 기타 지역에는 왜 그런 융합이 필요한지를 해명해 주는 미덕이 있다고 본다.
Abstract
This article is a reflection on theories of Confucian democracy which is considered to be necessary for the happiness of Koreans at present. I believe that theories of Confucian democracy are ones that should be appreciated in the process of solving the many challenges that Korean society faces today. I hereby look at the opinions of some political philosophers who argue that the convergence of Confucianism and democracy is necessary even for the development of democracy, and try to assess it accordingly. Theories of Confucian democracy seem to have a virtue that explains both the specific convergence method of tradition and modern culture in the East Asian region where Confucian tradition is alive and the reason why such convergence is necessary in other regions.
